Highlights for Children
Founded in 1946, Highlights for Children, Inc., is dedicated to the belief that "children are the world's most important people™." Every Highlights product helps children become their best selves and become curious, creative, caring and confident individuals.
About Highlights for Children
For over 70 years, Highlights for Children has been dedicated to helping children become their best selves—curious, creative, caring, and confident—by publishing content and creating experiences that engage, delight, and foster joyful learning.
Children across the globe have discovered a love of reading from the stories in our magazines, books, and digital library. To date, Highlights has launched versions of its publications in more than 60 countries. We are proud to bring Fun with a Purpose to your market.
Our Philosophy
Highlights Founders, Garry Cleveland Myers, Ph.D., and Caroline Clark Myers, wrote the mission statement that appears in every issue of Highlights:
This magazine of wholesome fun is dedicated to helping children grow in basic skills and knowledge, in creativeness, in ability to think and reason, in sensitivity to others, in high ideals and worthy ways of living—for children are the world's most important people.
Today, Highlights for Children is committed to the same values that guided the Myerses' work. We still believe children are the world's most important people. We believe they become their best selves by using their creativity and imaginations; developing their reading and reasoning skills and learning to treat others with kindness and respect.
Social-Emotional Learning with Highlights
Highlights believes that thinking, reasoning, and creating is fun—the kind of fun that offers lasting satisfaction for children and develops positive relationships and emotions. All Highlights products embody our motto—Fun with a Purpose—to deliver top-quality content that is engaging and helps children develop a love of reading.
Developing a love of reading is crucial for success and reinforces vocabulary, logic, critical thinking, reasoning, visual, and math skills. A love of reading also exposes children to stories about people who are different from them. Each of our products is created with a social and emotional learning lens to help develop the whole child. Studies show that children who are socially and emotionally educated have higher academic gains and skills that are important to long-term success.
Favorite Characters and Features
Generations of children around the world have enjoyed the authentic voices in High Five and Highlights magazines that help reinforce English verbal skills. Stories feature recurring characters that respect children and help them navigate their daily lives. Children know and love their favorite characters from Highlights stories and can often see their own situations being told through the characters. From Spot’s newest adventure, to Tex and Indi’s relatable stories about school and family, children can always find their friends at Highlights.
Hidden Pictures puzzles are possibly the most popular feature in Highlights magazine, but it’s hard to decide which part of a Hidden Pictures puzzle is the most fun: the interesting and sometimes funny big scene, learning new words and then finding their pictures, or the great feeling you get when you find all the objects. All we know is that children have loved Hidden Pictures since the first feature in June 1946! Now, we even host Hidden Pictures puzzles challenges across the globe.
